Educating Together: La Scuola’s Comunity

The community of La Scuola plays a fundamental role in supporting children by creating an inclusive and stimulating environment. In a city like New York, where families from all over the world can feel overwhelmed by the fast-paced rhythm of metropolitan life, La Scuola—together with families and local institutions—works to provide not only educational resources for children but also emotional support and growth opportunities.

We are a united community that, through our example, instills fundamental values in children through concrete actions. The events and volunteer activities we organize strengthen the sense of belonging and serve as a meaningful model for young learners.

Together, the community of La Scuola continues to build a support network that fosters both academic and personal success, preparing each student to become a responsible citizen with a global vision for the future.

My Journey In The IB PYP Transformation and Growth

So… instead of editing my last post with the english version, I decided to create a new one with the translation. It is overdue, but here is it -happy reading!

We are now a few months away from the end of this school year, a year that marked the beginning of a new journey, an exciting and deeply transformative journey toward the adoption of the IB PYP (Primary Years Program) framework.

My reflections on this journey

I cannot hide the fact that, at first, becoming familiar with PYP and thoroughly understanding its philosophy stirred a roller coaster of emotions in me. On the one hand, I was fascinated by the novelty, intrigued by the opportunities this change would bring and motivated by the desire to contribute to the growth of our school. On the other, I felt overwhelmed by the magnitude of the transformation that awaited us and the responsibility of guiding children on this new educational adventure.

The IB PYP framework takes an inquiry-based approach, putting active and meaningful learning at the center. This model promotes the development of curious, reflective and competent learners, encouraging them to become knowledgeable world citizens with an open mind and an authentic commitment to making the world a better place.

As an educator, I have always believed in the value of the learning process. The idea of developing in children the ability to “learn how to learn” rather than just “what to learn” has always been at the core of my pedagogical practice. PYP only reinforces this perspective, enhancing the hundred languages of childhood and offering tools to explore, experiment and construct knowledge in dynamic and interconnected ways.

Nearing the end of the school year, I pause to reflect on my professional transformations, and my personal growth. Adopting the IB PYP framework has meant challenging myself, questioning established practices, and opening myself to new perspectives on learning and teaching. Every change brings with it challenges, but also opportunities for evolution, and this journey has prompted me to reflect deeply on my role as an educator and my capacity for adaptation, innovation, and resilience.

None of this would have been possible without leadership that has believed in me, that encourages me to reach my potential, and that pushes me to no longer stay behind the scenes. Being part of a team that values ideas, supports growth, and fosters a collaborative environment has been critical in this journey. Feeling supported and inspired has allowed me to face challenges with enthusiasm and turn them into opportunities for continuous learning and improvement.

Looking back, I realize how much this journey has enriched not only the way I teach, but also the way I am. Change is never easy, but when it is guided by a clear and shared vision, it becomes an extraordinary opportunity for growth for all.

My Journey in the IB PYP Transformation and Growth / Il Mio Viaggio Verso L’ IB PYP: Un Anno di Trasformazioni e Crescita

Siamo ormai a pochi mesi dalla fine di quest’anno scolastico, un anno che ha segnato l’inizio di un nuovo percorso, un viaggio entusiasmante e trasformativo verso il framework IB PYP (Primary Years Programme).

Le mie riflessioni su questo percorso

Non posso nascondere che, all’inizio, acquisire familiarita` con il PYP e comprendere a fondo la filosofia abbia suscitato in me un roller coaster di emozioni. Da un lato, ero affascinata dalla novita`, incuriosita dalle opprtunita` che questo cambiamento avrebbe portato e motivata dal desiderio di contribuire alla crescita di una scuola in cui insegno da molti anni. Dall’altro, mi sentivo sopraffatta da tutti i cambiamenti che mi attendevano e dalla responsabilita` di guidare i miei studenti in questa nuova avventura. 

Il framework IB PYP adotta un approccio basato sull’indagine, mettendo al centro l’apprendimento attivo e significato. Questo metodo promuove lo sviluppo di studenti curiosi, riflessivi e competenti, incoraggiandoli a diventare cittadini del mondo consapevoli, con una mentalita` aperta e un un impegno autentico nel rendere il mondo un posto migliore. 

Come educatrice, ho sempre creduto nel valore del processo di apprendimento. L’idea di sviluppare nei bambini la capacita` di “imparare come imparare” piuttosto che limitarsi a “cosa imparare” e` sempre stata al centro della mia pratica pedagogica. Il PYP non fa che rafforzare questa prospettiva, valorizzando i cento linguaggi dell’infanzia e offrendo strumenti per esplorare, sperimentare e costruire conoscenze in modo dinamico e interconnesso. 

Vicini alla fine dell’anno scolastico mi fermo a riflettere sulle mie trasformazioni professionali e crescita personale. Adottare IB PYP ha significato rimettermi in gioco, mettere in discussione pratiche consolidate da tanti anni e aprirmi a nuove prospettive sull’apprendimento e sull’insegnamento. Ogni cambiamento porta con se’ sfide, ma anche opportunita` di evoluzione, e questo percorso mi ha spinta a riflettere profondamente sul mio ruolo di educatrice e sulla capacita` di adattamento, innovazione e flessibilta`. 

Tutto questo non sarebbe stato possibile senza la leadership del capo d’istituto, a cui sono profondamente grata, che ha creduto in me, che mi incoraggia ad esprimere il mio potenziale e che mi spinge a non rimanere piu` dietro le quinte. Far parte di un team che valorizza le idee, sostiene la crescita e promuove un ambiente collaborativo e` stato fondamentale in questo viaggio. Sentirsi supportati e ispirati mi ha permesso di affrontare le sfide con entusiasmo e di trasformarle in occasioni di apprendimento e miglioramento continuo.

Guardando indietro, mi rendo conto di quanto questo percorso abbia arricchito non solo il mio modo di insegnare, ma anche il mio modo di essere. Il cambiamento non e` mai facile, ma quando e` guidato da un leader/preside con una visione chiara e condivisa, diventa una straordinaria opportunita` di crescita per tutti.
